2024 Shine Run Announcement
After several years of hosting the The Shine Run while receiving feedback along the way, the PITS Crew is refining how it’s run to improve the efficiency and integrity of the event.
Adopting a Poker Chip System:
Instead of making a blind draw of 52 playing cards at each stop, participants will make a blind draw of 52 numbered poker chips. The dealer will present a bag containing the poker chips. The participant will draw from the bag and the dealer will document the number on the participants Shine Run Card and apply a stamp to certify it. The same Shine Run rules apply, where if you draw a duplicate number you must draw again until the number is unique. 5 stamps constitutes a complete Shine Run Card, but participants are free to visit additional stops to collect more stamps to increase their odds of the best hand possible. Each Shine Run Card will be scored using the best 5-card combination following standard poker hand hierarchy.
Creating the Master Key:
Prior to the beginning of the Shine Run, the PITS Crew will video a blind draw of a 52-card playing deck while assigning a number to each card drawn. The Master Key will remain under lock and key until after the Shine Run Party when they will post the key and video on Facebook.
We feel this system completely eliminates the possibility of manipulating Shine Run Cards to guarantee a level playing field.
Definition of Terms:
Shine Run Card – The required scoring card where a participant’s progress is tracked.
Shine Run Pamphlet – QR code on the Shine Run Card that provides a link to complete details about each stop.
Shine Run Stop – A pre-determined designation, typically a local business, that hosts a stop on the Shine Run.
Dealer – The shine run host that executes and certifies the participant’s draw.
Stamp – The dealer applies a custom stamp on the participants Shine Run Card to document their draw.
Shine Run Party – The time and location to drop off completed Shine Run Cards at the conclusion of the Shine Run on Thursday evening.
Poker Chips – Numbered chips that correspond to a specific playing card using the Master Key.
Master Key – A process to assign the 52 poker chip numbers to a standard 52-card playing card deck.
We decided to shake up the way our 2024 Shine Run will work. Instead of the traditional poker run style of simply drawing a card at each stop, we are going to have a bag with 52 poker chips in it. The chips will be numbered from 1-52. Participants will simply draw one chip and the host of the shine run stop will write that chip number on the score card and also stamp it. Just like years past, there can be no duplicate draws. If you get the same chip number you have already drawn, go ahead and draw another. You have the option to stop at 5 stamps (you are completing a poker hand), or continue until you have collected every possible stamp. Cards still get turned in on Thursday evening at the shine run party (junction 35 in Pigeon Forge).
To establish the master key for scoring, the PITS crew will take a deck of 52 cards and shuffle them. They will be numbered 1-52 after they are shuffled……..that will establish our “key” and scoring the cards can commence. Scoring will be the same as past years using standard poker hands.
This system completely eliminates any tampering of scores, and guarantees a level playing field. NOBODY will know what card is associated with what number during the shine run. Clear as mud? Let the anticipation start!!
